49ers announce 14 coaching staff changes

The 49ers announced 14 additions and changes to their coaching staff on Monday. Of these 14 changes, there are nine new signings and five title changes for coaches who are already on staff.

Let’s look at the new coaching staff and some of the off-season departures:

Stephen Adegoke, Defensive Quality Control
James Cregg, offensive line assistant
Joe Graves, offensive line assistant
Brian Griese, quarterback
Anthony Lynn, assistant head coach/running backs
Asauni Rufus, attacking quality control
Brian Schneider, Special Teams Coordinator
Deuce Schwartz, offensive quality control
Nick Sorensen, defensive assistant

Griese and Lynn are the two key names here. This is Griese’s first-ever coaching job and he will be responsible for helping guide Trey Lance through his first season as an NFL starter. That’s a big job for a former player fresh out of the broadcast booth.

Lynn will replace running backs coach Bobby Turner who is taking time off from the 2022 season. However, the 49ers and head coach Kyle Shanahan will rely heavily on Lynn when it comes to game planning and compensation for the loss of racing game coordinator Mike McDaniel.

The other interesting addition is Schneider, who will replace Hightower after a dreadful year for the 49ers’ special teams unit.

Brian Fleury, tight ends
Chris Foerster, Offensive Line/Running Game Coordinator
Leonard Hankerson, wide receivers
Klay Kubiak, assistant quarterback
Bobby Slowik, Offensive Passing Game Coordinator

A few key moves here include the moves of Foerster and Kubiak. Foerster will take over from McDaniel and be responsible for helping the 49ers remain one of the most successful running teams in the NFL. He’ll have some help with Lynn, but it’s still a big job.

Kubiak will now assist Griese in the development of Lance. Having someone who has been around the team in the QB room with Griese should be helpful. Slowik also went from passing game specialist to passing game coordinator. He may also have a role in introducing Lance.
