Cleveland Cavaliers shuffle coaching staff, appoint head coach Mike Gerrity Charge

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Cavaliers are making minor changes to their coaching staff this upcoming season, with former director of player development Mike Gerrity named head coach of the Cleveland Charge — the organization’s branch of the G League.

“We’re thrilled to have Mike Gerrity leading the way as the head coach of Cleveland’s charge,” Cavaliers head coach JB Bickerstaff said. “There is no better person for this job and we have extreme confidence in his ability to develop players. We have seen the fruits of his labor with the Cavaliers and expect the same commitment and dedication with the Charge. .

Gerrity joins the Charge after nine years with the Cavs.

After playing at the University of Southern California and playing two seasons in the NBA G League with the Dakota Wizards, Erie BayHawks and Maine Red Claws, Gerrity began his coaching career in 2013 as the Cavaliers’ assistant video coordinator. .

He was then named director of player development for the Charge, spending two seasons at Canton before being promoted to director of player development for the Cavaliers in 2018. Last September, Gerrity took the next step in his coaching career by becoming a full-time assistant coach.

A few months ago, Gerrity had the opportunity to coach the Cavs’ summer league roster — a valuable stepping stone to that new G League gig.

“We are thrilled to have Mike become Charge’s new head coach,” said Charge General Manager Brendon Yu. but really excels at player development. Mike also brings a unique perspective as a former D League player himself. I really look forward to working with him and having him apply his knowledge and experience to lead load.

With Gerrity leading the charge, last year’s head coach Dan Geriot will return to the Cavs as an assistant, sources tell cleveland.com.

Geriot is the latest Charge head coach to receive an NBA call-up after a successful stint with the club. Geriot joins Alex Jensen, Steve Hetzel, Jordi Fernandez and Nate Reinking. While Jensen, Hetzel and Fernandez went to other NBA teams, Reinking and Geriot stayed with the Cavs.

Earlier this offseason, Bickerstaff announced the addition of Luke Walton as an assistant coach. With him and Geriot now both in the mix, sources say Bickerstaff is still trying to figure out some of the internal responsibilities, including which coaches will be on the front of the bench this coming season.
