Harry Kewell shows respect to John Kennedy and Celtic coaching staff

Harry Kewell is an ambitious and driven character. We know this from his playing career alone, let alone intending to make a name for himself as a manager.

It is also a big famous name. Naturally, his appointment attracted a lot of attention in Scotland and his native country. However, he doesn’t arrive at Celtic with plans for first-team training to focus entirely on his ideas.

He made it clear that he was eager not only to learn from manager Ange Postecoglou but also from the rest of the coaching staff, including John Kennedy.

Kewell and Kennedy spent much of the Australian’s opening day reviewing the current Celtic side’s style of play and the former Liverpool man seems enthusiastic about what he’s heard.

Also asked about his goals for the upcoming season, Kewell said Celtic television: “I have strong ambitions but I’m not going to lie, I arrived in a huge club. I will sit down and I will learn. I will watch, I will study.

“I will see exactly what I can bring to the team. I’m not going to go right in there and say ‘this, this and that’. It is not me. I want to learn. Even talking to John Kennedy, he has so much experience. I’ll pick his brain left, right, and center.

And on his relationship with main man Ange Postecoglou, Kewell also clarified that he sees this as an opportunity to further his coaching education.

The 43-year-old continued: “I felt it was an opportunity for me to learn from a great manager who has started bringing his work to Europe. He is very direct in what he expects from its players. It’s similar to what I like.

“The way he told me about football and what he expects of me, I said straight away, of course I will come.”

I feel like even though Kewell approaches his new job with a very welcome and humble attitude, he has this natural fire in his personality that will shake things up over time.

That’s not a bad thing. This is what clubs need to progress. They need a range of different personalities and points of view to determine the best path forward.

Postecoglou is a character strong enough to allow this to happen under his leadership while still maintaining control of the general direction.
