Jim Harbaugh, Michigan Football finalizes coaching staff for 2022 season

Just like that, the Michigan football team’s coaching staff is complete.

Offensive line coach Sherrone Moore and quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss will serve as offensive co-coordinators. The pair replace Josh Gattis, who left the Wolverines three days ago to become the University of Miami’s offensive coordinator. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh announced the news in a press Release Wednesday afternoon.

“We have great chemistry among our offensive staff coaches,” Harbaugh said. “The teamwork was exceptional. Everyone has been integral to our attacking success and every coach’s contribution has been and will continue to be appreciated.

Moore also held the title of offensive coordinator last season. He won acclaim for his work with the offensive line, a unit that anchored Michigan’s offense and supported a dominant running game, eventually winning the Joe Moore Award as the nation’s leading group.

Weiss, whom Harbaugh hired from the Baltimore Ravens last February, quickly became a favorite for his work in the quarter room with junior Cade McNamara and rookie JJ McCarthy. If an NFL option had materialized for Harbaugh, it looked like he would take Weiss with him.

Grant Newsome, a former Michigan offensive tackle, will take on the role of tight ends coach. Newsome has been on the staff since 2018, serving two seasons as a student assistant coach in the tight ends room before moving into a graduate assistant role with the offensive line. In a corresponding move, Jay Harbaugh will switch from tight ends to safeties, while continuing to coach special teams.

“Grant has been a positive and motivating force on our coaching staff since joining us as a student assistant,” Harbaugh said in a press release. “We’ve been at the forefront of Grant’s development as a coach. … He’s a future star in this profession, and our players truly respect what Grant teaches on the pitch and the insight he shares from his life experiences.

Additionally, Ron Bellamy, who coached the safeties last season, will transition to the offensive side of the ball as the wide receivers coach.

Overall, Michigan’s current coaching staff is as follows:

Sherrone Moore – co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach

Matt Weiss – offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach

Mike Hart – running backs coach and running game coordinator

Ron Bellamy – wide receivers coach

Grant Newsome – Tight Ends Coach

Jesse Minter – defensive coordinator

Steve Clinkscale – defensive co-coordinator and defensive backs coach

Mike Elston – defensive line coach

George Helow – linebackers coach

Jay Harbaugh – safety coach and special teams coach
