Know the coaching staff of the 11 ISL teams for the 2022-23 season

No less than seven teams have new head coaches this quarter.

The ninth season of Indian Super League (ISL) kicked off in Kochi with last year’s finalists Kerala Blasters beat east bengal in a home thriller in the season opener. A whole new season means healthy changes, new faces and newbies. Teams make changes to their squad every summer – some to strengthen their squad, others undergo a complete overhaul to start from scratch. Apart from the players, clubs also often make changes to their coaching staff, ushering in new eras. Several ISL teams changed their head coaches and also made major changes to their coaching staff.

In this article, we will detail all the coaches of the ISL teams.

Jamshedpur FC

Jamshedpur FC finished last season at the top of the table and continued to earn the ISL Winner’s Shield. However, they haven’t had the best of starts this season under new boss Aidy Boothroyd. The Men of Steel have played two games so far and have won just one point.

FC Hyderabad

The ISL champions 2021-22 started the season with a bang. In 2020-21, Hyderabad finished fifth but came back stronger the following season and became champions. Head coach Manolo Marquez has nurtured young talents like Akash Mishra, Chinglensana Singh and many others, several of whom have also been called up to national level. This season, with no major changes to the team, Marquez will once again aim to qualify for the playoffs.

ATK Mohun Bagan

Like last season, ATK Mohun Bagan left on a bad note lose AFC Cup semi-finals to Kuala Lumpur City. They also failed to qualify for the Durand Cup Round of 16. Their ISL campaign started the same way, but the 5-2 win over Kerala Blasters injected an extreme level of motivation into the team. The Mariners would like to build the momentum ahead of the Kolkata Derby on October 29.

Kerala Blasters

Last season was one of the best for Kerala Blasters. They finished second in the ISL for the third time since its creation. A stat for the fans – Kerala Blasters have appointed the most coaches in ISL history, with most coaches leaving before one season. However, their last manager Ivan Vukomanovic transformed the club after a series of bad seasons. Vukomanovic in his first season took the team to the playoffs and finished second.

Bombay City F.C.

Mumbai City FC finished fifth last season outside the playoffs after starting the campaign on a high note. However, the leadership of the ship remains with Des Buckingham. Fans expect the Islanders to make the playoffs this season. In particular, the city of Mumbai has become the first Indian club to win an AFC Champions League game under Des Buckinghams.

Bangalore F.C.

Bengaluru FC have performed poorly over the past two seasons. The Karnataka club had to change two coaches in the process but could not achieve the expected results. This season, the club got off to a flying start, win the Durand Cup. In the ISL, they recorded a win, a loss and a draw in their first three matches. In Simon Grayson, they also have a manager who has managed several Premier League clubs like Leeds United in the past.

Odisha FC

Odisha FC showed good form in the first half of the previous season but could not continue their momentum which ultimately cost them the playoff spot. But with the return of Josep Gombau, the team brought in quality foreigners as replacements. The team have already registered two comebacks this season.

Chennaiyin FC

The two-time ISL winners haven’t had the best results in the past two seasons. After the departure of Owen Coyle, management appointed Csaba Laszlo and Bozidar Bandovic. However, the two failed to qualify for the playoffs. For ISL 2022-23, management has brought in Thomas Brdaric from Germany. Brdaric arrived in India in early July and guided Chennaiyin FC to the 2022 Durand Cup semi-finals.

FC Goa

ISL 2021-22 was one of FC Goa’s worst seasons after a string of poor results and the departure of head coach Juan Ferrando midway through the season. This year, Carlos Pena took over as head coach, having previously represented the club as a player. The Spaniard has played 39 games and scored twice. In 2019-20, he also raised the first-ever ISL league winners’ shield.

United Northeast

Khalid Jamil has become the first Indian coach to lead an ISL team. However, he couldn’t do the role justice, finishing 10th in the league standings. Jamil after taking the team to the Season 7 playoffs, failed to repeat it next time. As a result, NEUFC management appointed Israeli Marco Balbul as head coach. NorthEast will look to perform better under Balbul and finish higher this season. Unfortunately, they have already lost their first three games and are bottom of the table.

east bengal

After entering the ISL, East Bengal did not enjoy enough success, losing the majority of their games. The club had problems both on and off the pitch, ultimately affecting the team’s overall performance graph. The Red & Golds have changed managers three times since 2020 and have now trusted former Indian national team manager Stephen Constantine who will seek to revive the club.
