Los Angeles Lakers superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis are said to be fans of Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse.
Broderick Turner of Los Angeles Times reported on Monday that James and Davis had both “told friends they liked the way Nurse coached.” Turner noted that the Raptors coach is represented by Klutch Sports, which is also the agency for the Lakers’ two star players.
The update comes after LA fired Frank Vogel after one of the most disappointing seasons in recent NBA history as the team missed the playoffs with a 33-49 record.
Despite the interest, it’s unclear if the Lakers have a chance of moving Nurse away from the Raptors.
Turner reported “there has been nothing confirmed by discussion from any party” and added “no one in the league thinks Toronto will let him go.”
The other candidates listed in the Los Angeles Time The report includes Quin Snyder of the Utah Jazz, Doc Rivers of the Philadelphia 76ers, Juwan Howard of the University of Michigan, Milwaukee Bucks assistant Darvin Ham, former Orlando Magic head coach Steve Clifford and former coach -Portland Trail Blazers leader Terry Stotts.
Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka mentioned
the front office’s goal is to hire a new coach ahead of the 2022 NBA Draft, scheduled for June 23.
Nurse has been on the Raptors coaching staff since 2013 and was promoted to head coach in 2018. He guided the franchise to a 186-122 record in the regular season and a 23-12 mark in the playoffs, setting evident by the team. NBA Championship 2019.
Toronto has gone 48-34 this season and is close to starting the playoffs, so the Lakers will likely have to wait until after that run to see if the 54-year-old Iowa native could be a realistic candidate. .
Whether Los Angeles hires Nurse or another of the candidates, the most important part of the offseason will be spending a second straight year trying to replenish the roster around James and Davis. Last summer’s efforts did not yield results.
The Lakers will also need better health from their All-Star duo, who combined to miss 68 games during the 2021-22 campaign, which played a major role in the team’s failure. to meet expectations.
So while hiring coaches is critically important, it’s one of many factors that will determine whether LA bounces back in a major way next season.
