Some Jaguars players ‘not thrilled’ with Urban Meyer’s coaching style: ‘They’re not off to a good start’

The Urban Meyer experience got off to a bad start in Jacksonville.

Meyer faced a lot of criticism ahead of the 2021 NFL season, from his decision to bring in Tim Tebow as his stretch to his reluctance to name No. 1 pick Trevor Lawrence, the Jaguars’ starting quarterback. (Meyer finally confirmed what everyone already knew on Wednesday, telling reporters that Lawrence is at the top of the QB depth chart.)

Well, Jags fans, we have more bad news. During an appearance on Tuesday’s edition of ‘The DA Show,’ CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco told Damon Amendolara that some Jacksonville players shared less than stellar criticism of the former Florida State coach. and Ohio.

“He has to change some things. He brought a bunch of college-type things to the program, which I don’t necessarily agree with,” Prisco said. “And I heard some players weren’t too happy with him either, including having a microphone on the pitch, one of his assistants on the pitch during practice with a boom mic, saying to everyone to hydrate and hurry up and go to the next period.

“So obviously it’s a work in progress. He’s been a good football coach wherever he’s been. It’s very different when you get guys into your school and you have a group of the best players, the five stars, that he’s trying to build something. So it’s going to be a challenge. I’m not giving up on what he can do in his first two games. I don’t think it’s fair for him. I don’t think it’s fair to the quarterback. But they’re not starting off on the right foot.”

The Jaguars struggled in the preseason, losing their first two games to the Browns and Saints, and the offense in particular was a mess. As Jacob Camenker of Sporting News noted, they have as many three-and-outs as points in Lawrence’s eight practices. To make matters worse, rookie running back Travis Etienne will miss the entire 2021 campaign after suffering a foot injury.

If Jacksonville can’t make meaningful improvements, the blame will fall on Meyer’s feet. He received, as Prico put it, “carte blanche” from the Jaguars front office.

“From everything he changed inside the building – they added a bunch of new things, cryotherapy, all kinds of things were added in this building at his request,” Prisco said. “He’s got the biggest coaching staff in the NFL. It’s huge, so he’s got everything he wanted there. There’s a coach, a stretch coach, for every position they’re in. ‘stretch so they all get the right stretch. The team went above and beyond what he asked for, so now he has to win.

“And the thing is, he said he has the best of the best in his coaching staff. Clearly this attack is a disaster right now. They have no idea what’s going on. “they do. … They have problems. They have a week to fix them, or a few weeks before the regular season. But at the moment, they don’t look very good.
