The United States Athletics Coaching Staff was recently named for the 2022 season. SPIRE Academy, home to one of the largest indoor and outdoor athletics complexes in the world, is proud to announce that Kibwé Johnson , Director of Athletics and Head Coach – Throwing, is one of the elite coaches who will lead Team USA for the 2022 season.
Coach Johnson established himself as one of the nation’s greatest hammer throwers of all time, winning five U.S. titles and four U.S. runners-up and was on numerous U.S. national teams before his retirement in 2017. The two-time Olympian and Pan American gold medalist joined SPIRE in 2021. His love for coaching athletes looking to elevate their game comes from the mentors who have inspired him throughout his journey. Johnson’s philosophy is simple and precise when it comes to achieving success in training athletes of all ages. “My coaching style is based on communication and the belief that relationships are important. USATF coaching positions are based on nominations and then peer voting. The opportunity is one Johnson is extremely grateful for, especially to reconnect and spend time with other athletes he’s known over the decades while meeting new ones. “It really is an amazing feeling to have so many connections from all over the world in a sport that I really enjoy. Every place we go has so much to offer the human experience.
Influential definitely defines Johnson when it comes to leading his students at home and his team abroad. His next assignment for the USATF will be assistant throwing coach at the U20 World Championships in Athletics, August 1-6, in Cali, Colombia.
