The Burnley recruitment, training, style and advantages that make the Clarets ‘one of the best in the league’

Stoke City boss Alex Neil has been hugely impressed with what he has seen from Vincent Kompany’s Burnley so far this season ahead of Wednesday night’s Turf Moor meeting.

Neil, who left Sunderland for Stoke earlier in the campaign, has watched the Clarets half a dozen times this term and rates them as well as anyone in the Championship. The Scot, who saw his side beaten 4-0 at home by Watford last time out, is bracing for a tough test from a Burnley side he believes are polar opposites to the Clarets under Sean Dyche.

Kompany introduced a possession-based style and revamped an aging squad and replenished the ranks with young players with plenty of potential alongside a core of experienced professionals. And while Burnley have had an encouraging start and sit fourth after 11 games, six draws mean there have been missed chances along the way.

But Neil, whose Stoke side are 17th in the table, firmly believes the Clarets will be up there in May as he hailed Kompany’s training methods and the problems they pose for opponents.

“They had over 72 per cent possession in seven of the first 11 games,” Burnley’s Neil said, speaking to the Stoke Sentinel. “They are good on the ball, they move the ball well and they recruited very well.

“If you look at where Burnley was under Sean Dyche in terms of how they played, they’re basically the turnaround of that now. Burnley was really quite direct, up and down, sides of you, crosses in the box This time they take the ball and move it around, try forward rotations, create a spare player. That’s what they try to do all the time. They’re very well trained and they’re very good. in this domain.

“To be honest the weekend against Cardiff they were really unhappy not to win. In my opinion they are one of the best teams in the league. I’ve seen them probably six times this year. They pose without doubt as many dilemmas as any team in the league as far as I’m concerned.”
